6 Activities To Add to a Shared Family Calendar
A shared family calendar is a fantastic tool for organizing family schedules, creating cherished memories, and strengthening bonds within the household. I’ve found it has brought our family even closer, leaving the stress behind and with more time for everyone to have fun.
However, it’s not only for meetings, homework, chores, and things of that nature. You can also use a shared family calendar to schedule fun activities for everyone! Let’s get started!
Family Game Night
Who doesn’t love a good family game night? If you haven’t had one before, why not use Family Daily to plan one this weekend? There are so many different ways to go about it, too. You could go with a classic board game or card game, or even try video games (although be prepared for your kids to probably win).
There’s never been a game night where we haven’t enjoyed hours of laughter. However, it also teaches teamwork, strategizing, and learning how to win and lose, humbly. It’s only natural for some to like certain games more than others, so you may try rotating games each time you play. This is the perfect opportunity for you all to bond and let the stress melt away, together.
Outdoor Adventures
Getting some fresh air should never be underestimated. It can reduce stress levels, encourage healthy vitamin D levels, and get those muscles burning! Now, more than ever before, it’s important to get out of the house, step away from the screens, and get in touch with Mother Nature.
When it comes to the outdoors, there are practically neverending activities you and your family can partake in. For promoting physical fitness, you can try going on a hike or bike ride, or even an entire camping weekend! The smell of pine trees or roasting s’mores on the fire for the first time with the family is simply priceless.
Perhaps one of your family members plays a sport like soccer or even tennis. This could be a great opportunity for them to show the rest of your family how to play, so you can all share one of their interests.
Regardless, getting out into the open air is a great opportunity for relaxation, exploration, and spending quality time together without the distraction of electronic devices. Promoting a healthy lifestyle is a great habit to start at an early age, but it’s never too late! I like going to the YMCA with my kids, as there’s something for everyone. They can take a yoga or spin class while I go lift weights, or we can all go swimming!
Cooking, Grilling, or Baking Sessions
Don’t underestimate the opportunity for fun and learning in the kitchen! Plus, if you want your kids to make you breakfast in bed one day, you have to teach them how to make the pancakes first, right?!
You can try this out in a variety of ways. Perhaps you all can take different roles in preparing dinner together. Alternatively, you can learn a recipe together with your family members which promotes teamwork, creativity, and the joy of sharing tasty meals made by the entire household!
Maybe you have a child who really likes hamburgers and cookouts? You can teach them how to properly cook things on the grill. Maybe you have a child with a sweet tooth? Show them how to bake chocolate chip cookies or make something simple like French Toast! The opportunities are endless.
Pro Tip: use Family Daily’s built in recipe library to choose a meal the whole family will enjoy!
Movie Nights
Movie nights are the perfect opportunity to kick back and relax with the rest of your family. They’re also relatively easy to plan, as you know that you’ll only need a couple of hours to schedule it in.
What I found works really well is to set up a regular event in our shared family calendar that occurs every week. I like Friday nights as there’s no school night or other commitments any of us have to tend to that night or the next morning. However, you can select a night that works best for you and your crew.
Arts and Crafts
Expressing creativity can be done in a variety of ways, and arts and crafts allow for exactly that. Moreover, it’s one of my favorite ways to spend time with the entire family. Carving pumpkins around October, decorating around the holidays, painting, drawing, pottery - the list goes on and on.
It’s a fantastic way to encourage self-expression and artistry, no matter what the age or interest is. I also find that it’s a great way to learn more about your kids and yourself. You get to see their problem-solving and imaginative thinking, which you can’t put a price on.
Volunteer Work
Volunteer work doesn’t have to be a bore, but it also doesn’t have to be thrilling, either. Volunteering can actually be a great experience, and there are so many places that need help. You can ask your children which organization or charity they’d prefer to work in, or you can do something as a family, like organize and participate in a neighborhood cleanup!
We used to volunteer at the local humane society when I was growing up, and it was a fantastic way to learn about empathy, the proper treatment of animals, and so much more.
