How Can I Assign Tasks to Family Members on a Shared Family To Do List?
Keeping the inner workings of a family running smoothly is a team sport. Imagine that only one person was responsible for every single task that needed to happen in the home. Seems impossible, right?
Delegating tasks is so important to maintain a healthy household. Each person should be in charge of completing certain tasks or taking turns completing various tasks. This makes the workload much lighter as everyone is sharing the work. No one wants to be responsible for every single chore!
The biggest question many families have is, “How can I keep track of the chores?” It’s all too easy to verbally hand out chores and have your family members forget what they need to get done. This is why maintaining some sort of chart or tracking system is crucial to keep everyone on track.
There are many different ways you can monitor chores. You can use the classic whiteboard where you write down the chore and family member names, or even use a group chat through text to assign chores as needed. While this can work for some families, it doesn’t work for all. If you want to bring your family’s efficiency to the next level, you need to use a shared family to-do list.
What is a Shared Family To Do List?
With all of the commitments that you need to keep track of, it can be easy to lose track of some. School activities, work meetings, social gatherings, it’s a wonder that anyone can keep their head on straight! When it comes to making sure all of these obligations are met, it’s important to maintain optimal productivity and diligence when it comes to creating your schedule.
You may be familiar with shared family to-do lists without being aware of it. Have you ever seen or used a whiteboard somewhere in your house that lists out chores? Or even write it down on a piece of paper? Then you know exactly what a shared family to-do list is! Creating lists the old-fashion way is an option, but as we technologically progress, more organized and time-efficient options have become available.
Using the old pen and paper might feel more comfortable to you, but embracing this technology has been shown to be invaluable in improving the lives of families. It can come in an app on a smartphone, just like Family Daily. Once you quickly learn the easy-to-use interface, you are good to start creating and sharing tasks to make sure everything on the to-do list gets done!
How Do I Assign Tasks?
Assigning tasks to your family members is a seamless process. Below, we’ll walk you through exactly how to do so in Family Daily:
Visit the “List” page and click on “Add to List” in the lower right corner.
A new list will open up. You will add a title and click the “>” right arrow in the list title row.
This will bring you to a list of details that you can fill in. You can include a note, due date, reminder, repeat, file attachment, and, of course, the member you’d like to assign the task to.
Once you have input all of the task information, you can press save. As tasks are assigned to different members, it will be available on their profile, and they can mark it complete as they finish.
It’s really that simple!
Tips for Adding and Describing Tasks
When you are creating tasks for your family members, you want the instructions to be as clear and concise as possible. If you add a vague title with no description, it might not get done the way it should! Typing out detailed instructions or notes can help guide your family member to complete the task the right way the first time.
You can also create recurring tasks to make everyone’s lives easier! If there are chores that are done regularly, such as taking the trash out each week, you can set the task to give out alerts regularly at the same time. Never again will your trash pile up because *someone* forgot to take it out on trash day!
Another helpful tip is to break down certain tasks. This is especially helpful for kids. If you add “clean your room” and nothing else, it may not get done the way you were hoping for. You can do multiple tasks such as “vacuuming,” “making your bed,” and “bringing down dirty laundry,” as all part of the task of cleaning their bedroom. This ensures that everyone is on the same page for expectations!
It is also important to keep in mind that you should try to assign tasks throughout the family as fairly as possible. The last thing you want to do is to assign one person seven or eight tasks while another person only has three. Chores should also be assigned according to age range. You wouldn’t expect a six-year-old to dust the fine china!
